Hey guys, so I'm wondering if there are any mmo games out there like sword art online.
I really want a feature like that I could open my own shops and what not and be a blacksmith for other players for example.
An MMO with lots of simulation like SAO.
Thanks guys Honestly, the only RELEASED triple A title that gives off SAO vibes is Final Fantasy 14 in my opinion.
There's an extensive crafting system, housing, PvP and a storyline that very much puts you in the middle of the world, starting as a lowly adventurer and eventually becoming a warrior of light that rises up against the gods themselves.
The narration and diaglogue always puts you firmly in the position of 'the hero' much like you would expect Kirito to be treated.
Bandits insult you and call you scum, only to eat their words and beg at your feet once they see your true identity later in the storyline.
Unlike most MMO's NPC's actually feel ashamed for sending you on menial tasks once you've hit a higher level and they comment on it with sarcastic dialogue.
No quests to kill 10 boars after having just stopped a dragon's rampage.
Progression is very much tiered into layers, with the forefront of all raid content being extreme modes and savage modes.
Once the top raiding guilds have tiers cleared, subsequent patches activate 'the echo', a scaling buff that is intended to allow the middle of the pack and eventually the players that fall behind to clear content and catch up.
There's no permanent death and the penalty for dying is a mere 15% status debuff and in the worst case scenario a very long trek back if you had no healer present.
Class systems are dynamic and every character can learn everything.
If you are a level 50 Warrior, you can pick up a healing staff and heal.
You'll have to train your healing class upto level 50 to be effective enough in it, however.
In this regard the so called 'alts' are not needed, and having more than 1 character is merely an optional convenience or a way of doing more time-locked content at a certain moment.
I've been really interested in FF XIV but I've just been skeptical because of the fact that ESO which released around the same time was disappointing and not worth paying the monthly fee.
Is it really that good and is it worth the monthly fee?
Or is it similar to other generic MMOs?
FF XIV is actually celebrating it's first anniversary, so it's quite a bit older than ESO already.
The launch for FFXIV was pretty rough, the producer had a maximum of 500k subs in mind and they quickly broke a million, servers were down more often than up.
I'm obviously biased as a current player but I've tried out my fair share of MMO's.
I've played WoW at a raiding level for 4 years, followed by 4 years of being subbed on and off.
I've played Guildwars extensively, but I was turned off by Guildwars 2 quite a bit.
EVE Online has been my MMO on the side for 3 or so years aswell, I was intrigued by the massive scale and the chance to pay for my subscription with in-game money.
I've hit upto Veteran rank 6 in ESO and quite frankly I enjoyed the storyline and the setting.
I do believe that had all the ESO content been as great as the 1-50 experience, with less combat lag and game breaking bugs overall, I would've never put it down.
All these MMO's in mind, I believe FF 14 is the most elegant of them all by a margin.
I'll admit that I did put it down after capping out my main class and hitting endgame content a month or so after launch, because the endgame any games like sao the time simply was not enticing and fast paced enough.
The developer has since released a formal apology for all the issues surrounding the first few months since launch and I can honestly say that the game has become fantastic since then, with frequent updates and a developer team that really listens to the playerbase and their requests for the most part, that is.
This includes implementing PvP, arena and see more based - like money, alternative means of leveling such as dungeon roulettes, storyline roulettes, treasure hunts, hunting logs, challenge logs, sightseeing logs, improvements to FATEs public events that dynamically popup and grant XP and much more.
You can even level up and quest with your chocobo mount, turning him into your own DPS, tank or healer, or a combination of all 3 at your leisure.
Most importantly, this game actually FEELS like final fantasy.
I log in and I feel like a big hero, as if I'm playing the RPG's as cloud or lightning.
The story is really slow at the start, and honestly level 1-30 really takes you by the hand with training wheels and all.
Once you hit level 30 you will unlock your powers in true final fantasy fashion, becoming one of the chosen few to master your class and play as a job instead In the storyline that is, every player unlocks them ofcourse.
Arcanists for example, unlock the long lost art of summoning while a Lancer takes up arms and becomes the ultra-bursty Dragoon job.
The thing that most reminds me of SAO is the crafting system.

Is it leaning toward Wow or towards ESO?
Meaning no pay to win and also are items heavily over priced meaning hours of grinding or are they reasonably priced?
The combat is leaning towards WoW heavily, the skill bar is unlocked unlike in ESO and GW2 and dodging is done by actively moving away rather than pressing a dodge button.
The global cooldown or GCD for short is slower than WoW, and cast times are generally longer.
Combat is focused more on optimalization and perfection of your rotation and reaction, rather than on your spamming of skills.

Making goods is a massive part of FFXIV, many players in my Free Company guild main as crafters and only play their combat classes on the side.

You're not limited to a single craft, you can be a blacksmith, armorer, weaver, alchemist and many more.
Each craft you level unlocks certain specific skills that can be shared.
A blacksmith unlocks the much wanted skill any games like sao which reduces the recipe level temporarily, making it easier to improve the quality and progress on your item for 5 attempts.
Should you want to level for example carpenting later on, you can use your unlocked innovation skill to make even better gear than you could as a crafter trained in only a single profession.
The higher your crafting gets, the more cross class skills and unlocks you will get and be able to use.
Houses resemble real life in the sense that they start off very expensive when a zone is released, and get cheaper every week untill somebody buys them.
You'll need to buy a piece of land in one of currently 3 zones, and then build a house on it.
The lowest price is currently 2 million gill for a small house, and upto a hundred million for the largest mansions that are marketed at large raiding or crafting guilds.
If your guild owns a house, you can buy a personal room for 300k, which is a very popular option.

Houses offer chocobo stables to train your mount and change it's colour and name, gardens to plant valuable herbs and vegetables in, and optional crafting stations that will increase your aptitude in crafting when near them.

During leveling most players earn 300k-400k from questing, with crafters earning easily double that amount.
You can buy a room pretty much right after hitting level 50 the required level to be able to buy housing permits Character creation is pretty in depth, moreso than WoW and Guildwars but less than ESO any games like sao EVE Online, the game does not use sliders, rather it uses pre-set faces with 4-5 options for noses, mouths, eye shape, etc.

I do know the new FF14 patch is coming soon with even more updates to housing and the crafting system, and i believe archage is in open beta now so there's that.
Can you get it on MAC without any extra software for making it seem like it's playing on windows e.
Right now, Archeage is looking like the closest thing we'll get in terms of an open-world sand-box-y game.
The art style is completely different, and it doesn't have "Sword Skills", but it does have a classless system with levels, open world housing, farming, and a full-fledged crafting system.
The questing is theme-parky-y to get you levels, but there's so any games like sao else to do besides questing it's closer to a sandbox game in some respects.
I played some in Closed Beta, and I'm eagerly awaiting the Open Beta, starting this Thursday.
